India now hosts the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity. Built in dedication to Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who served as the first home minister of independent India, the statue has been in the news for some time for different reasons. The statue was inaugurated on Oct. 31, Wednesday, and is now open for public.

Political inclinations and opinions apart, Statue Of Unity is an engineering and technological marvel in itself. Here are some of the amazing facts about the Statue Of Unity that will blow your mind away:

1.  If you are still in doubt, Statue of Unity is THE tallest statue in the world. It has beaten the previous tallest by 23 meters (China’s Spring Temple Buddha). Standing at 182 mt, this Indian statue is almost double the height of the Statue of Liberty (93 meters tall) in the US.

2.  The statue was sculpted by Ram Vanji Sutar, a 93-year-old Indian, who had sculpted many statues across the world.

3. A whopping amount of Rs. 3000 crore was spent to build this statue. The amount was spent by the Government of Gujarat.

4.   Despite being the mammoth task, it took only 42 months to complete the statue and open it for the public. 3000 workers used to work on the site every day, including 300 engineers from infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

5.  The statue, made by L & T, has been constructed in a way to withstand winds of 180 km/hour and earthquakes up to 6.5 Richter scale.

6.  There are two lifts in the core of the statue to take visitors to the viewing gallery at 153 meters (400 feet close to the chest of the Sardar Patel statue). It can accommodate 200 people at a time.

7.  The gallery offers an expansive overwhelming view of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and magnificent River Narmada. It also has a selfie point for shutterbugs.
