Your favorite pasta is completely safe! Yes, you read that right.
All this while when you were stopping yourself and your loved ones even from the infrequent intake, thinking this traditional Italian cuisine causes obesity, it turns out that this humble Italian migrant does not contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat. In fact, it has a low glycemic index (GI), which simply implies that it causes smaller increases in blood sugar levels than those caused by eating foods with a high glycemic index like white bread and even corn flakes.
The finding comes after an intensive study done by researchers from St. Michael’s Hospital in Ontario that was published in the journal BMJ Open. Under the study, researchers did a systematic review and meta-analysis of all the available evidence from randomized controlled trials (which is the gold standard of research design).
For the study, the researchers identified 30 randomized control trials involving almost 2,500 people who ate pasta instead of other carbohydrates as part of a healthy low-glycemic index diet. The people on clinical trials ate 3.3 servings a week instead of other carbohydrates with each serving equalling to about one-half cup of cooked pasta. The result of the study clearly mentions that “pasta, in the context of low-GI dietary patterns, does not adversely affect adiposity and even reduces body weight and BMI compared with higher-GI dietary patterns.”
“The study found that pasta didn’t contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat,” Indian Express quoted the study’s lead author John Sievenpiper as saying. “In fact, analysis actually showed a small weight loss. So contrary to concerns, perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet such as a GI diet.”
