It is that time of the year again when deadly and poisonous smog engulfs everything around. While fleeing away from this gas chamber seems to be a wise move, not everyone of us can do that in a jiffy.
Living in world’s most polluted city takes it’s toll on our bodies. To add on to it, the current air quality here in Delhi is reportedly worse than Beijing and is filled with cancer-causing insidious particles. The best we can do is to protect ourselves by following some easy measures.
Ourtitibits has come up with some measures to protect you and your loved ones from this deadly Delhi smog:
Avoid Going Outdoors At Night:
While Delhi smog has engulfed NCR like a blanket, varying just a bit depending on the neighborhood and traffic, the coldest time i.e. middle of the night is the worst time to venture out. Pollutants from cars and factories get trapped under a blanket of warm air, causing air quality to dip down drastically.
Arm Yourself With Antioxidant-Rich Food:
‘When the human body is exposed to polluted air, there is an increase in the formation of free radicals, which are known to degrade normal healthy tissues. To protect oneself, foods that are antioxidant-rich should be consumed adequately,” NDTV quoted Dr. Rupali Dutta, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Fortis-Escorts Hospital, as saying. So, increase the intake of fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in Vitamin A and C.
Eat carrots, green leafy vegetables, pumpkin, milk, fish and tomato in abundance. Also, increase Vitamin C in your diet by including citrus fruits like orange and lime, bellpeppers, broccoli, papaya and strawberries. Eat lots of jaggery too.
Install Air Purifiers:
Although priced heftily, air purifiers are a good option to keep the air atleast inside in your house healthy. Ask your child’s school too to get such purifiers installed inside the premises.
Keep Air-Purifying Indoor Plants:
There are many plants that can purify the indoor air and that too, without burning a hole in your pocket. They simpley filter out certain harmful compounds in the air and make it much healthier to breathe. Keep NASA-approved Peace Lily, Spider Plant, English Ivy, Boston Fern and Aloe Vera in different corners of your house to breathe in pure air while indoors.
Ventilate Your House In Afternoon:
Skip opening windows in the morning to avoid Delhi smog. Instead, ventilate your house between 3 pm to 5 pm as this is the time when pollution level is the lowest. But do that only if you see sky clearing up and sunrays outside. Else it is better to keep them shut tightly.
Mask It Up:
If you have to venture out open in this Delhi smog, go out with a mask that can help keep out soot and smoke. However, remember not every mask is capable of keeping the pollutant out. While surgical mask proves to be futile, N95 Particulate respirator is cumbersome to use. Totobobo mask is effective, but comes at a hefty price. Look for N95 Aura Particulate Respirator which is both comfortable and affordable.
