“The defense will prove that this case is a classic example of a woman using as a weapon the very law that was made to protect her,” a lawyer (Akshaye Khanna) announces in the pin-drop court room. He is referring to Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, under which a woman can accuse a man of rape if he has sexual intercourse with her without her consent. The scene is from Section 375 trailer which is out and is filled with many such moments which will leave you pondering over for a while.
Section 375 is a real-life cases-inspired courtroom drama where in filmmaker Rohan (Rahul Bhat) is accused of raping Anjali (Meera Chopra), a junior costume assistant who is represented by Hiral Mehta (Richa Chadha). The premise of Section 375 trailer is not new or extraordinary especially when we have seen “Pink” not a very long time ago, but the treatment is definitely fresh.
Section 375 trailer begins with what seems to be uncomfortable interrogation round wherein the victim is answering questions put forward by a male police inspector. Akshaye plays a best-in-the-business defense lawyer who is hell-bound to give a fair standing to his client in the court while Richa Chadha plays a tough public prosecutor trying to get justice for the survivor. Television news studios join the fray along with protests erupting on the streets.
The movie seems to bring out the best in Richa Chaddha who is locking horns with legal bigwig in a big way. Akshaye Khanna in action will be another major attraction of the movie. However, it is Meera Chopra, who is playing the rape victim seems to be promising, whom we are most eagerly looking forward to. The opening scene featuring the young actress is too strong to ignore and it will be interesting to see the new talent on the screen sharing space with established artists.
The story and screenplay is written by Manish Gupta of Rahasya fame. The movie is directed by Ajay Bahl who also directed the critically acclaimed film BA Pass (2012) and is produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak, Abhishek Pathak and SCIPL.
Section 375 is set to release on Sept. 13. Until then, watch the trailer right here.
